Our Story
Nancy's lifelong love of textiles started at a young age when her favorite babysitter brought a rabbit pelt with her one day and proceeded to transform it into a beautiful doll coat. After her mother taught her to use their old Singer sewing machine, she began sewing clothes for her dolls and later for herself and others. After marrying her husband Rob in 1979, she made curtains and other soft furnishings for each of their homes.
In 2001, after a career in computer programming and working several years in other sewing fields, including custom apparel, alterations, and appliqued clothing, Nancy established a drapery business at her home. She started with 2 home machines and a cutting table purchased from a fabric store, serving retail customers and doing everything from design to installation. Industrial equipment was added over the years and in 2007 the business became Pine House Drapery. In 2008 a new workroom was built in East Jordan, Rob joined the business as an upholsterer, and Pine House Drapery began serving interior designers in Charlevoix and Emmet counties and the surrounding areas of northern Michigan.
Pine House Drapery is a professionally equipped workroom. Our industrial sewing machines, large worktables, and other tools and equipment are suited to each task from lightweight sheer drapery to heavy upholstery and ensure that your projects have a beautiful, custom finish.
We attend seminars and network extensively with others in the custom home furnishings industry to keep up with the latest techniques. From 2016-2019, and again in 2022, Nancy taught classes at the Custom Workroom Conference on many subjects, including cushions, bedding and cornices. In 2018, she began teaching hands on classes on cushions & pillows at the Custom Workroom Technical Center in Tryon, North Carolina.
